Welcome
Welcome to our web site. We of the Disability Alliance Sunderland (DAS) believe that we have managed to provide a very accessible site and we hope you have a successful and even an enjoyable visit.
We intend this Web Site to be of use to a very wide range of people, especially and particularly those who are disabled or who care for disabled people.
If however you have any difficulty in accessing the information available here then we would be keen for you to tell us.
The 'Contact Us' page may then be of use to you.
This is our first Web Site and as such we are starting relatively small, intending to increase the amount of sections as we move forward.
Schemes, Organisations, Etc.
Those sections will include organisations, schemes, projects and links to web sites that are considered of value to disabled people.
The Sunderland Shopmobility Scheme would be an example of such schemes, this one provided from the premises of Ross Care's Mobility Products Store in the Bridges Shopping Centre, Sunderland. (It is located on the same level as the roof top car park where there is ample accessible parking for disabled visitors.) They provide powered scooters and both manually and electrically powered wheelchairs for those for whom mobility is a problem and who are also members of the scheme. The Royal Princess Trust, Sunderland Carers' Centre is an example of a very well regarded organisation that offers a wealth of support, choices and opportunities for carers across the City and beyond. Based at 12, Toward Road, Sunderland they may be contacted on Tel: 0191 567 3232.
People Into Employment (PIE) offers encouragement, support, training and more to disabled people who may wish to consider returning to work or trying it for the very first time. PIE have a great deal of knowledge and experience in helping people reach decisions about their employment options and also in preparing them for such an eventuality. They have enabled many to become successful members of the local workforce and have helped many others to reach a position of self confidence that had previously seemed beyond them. Based as part of ETEC, Hudson House, 1, Moore Terrace, Hendon, Sunderland their telephone number is: 0191 514 6150 - ask for PIE.

Age UK (Previously Age Concern and Help The Aged) Two highly regarded national organisations have united under one name, Age UK, for the greater benefit of older people within our communities. For the over 50's, they offer a huge number of schemes, choices, support, opportunities, projects, educational and leisure courses; far too many to list here. Their local branch is at the Bradbury Centre on Stockton Road, Sunderland. Tel: 0191 5141131.
Sunderland People First. For people with Learning Disabilities: Day provision, self supporting advocacy, campaigns, leisure and educational opportunities, etc. Based at Pennywell Business Centre. Tel: 0191 534 7784
There are many more extremely useful and highly regarded groups and organisations and we hope to have links to many of them in the future. We would also intend to have links to statutory services for your convenience.
Directory.
In the mean time might we point you towards the Directory Page of this web site. This directory was up-dated and re-printed late in 2008. (Original was printed in 2001) You can read it on-line or download it (PDF) and view it at your leisure on your own PC. It contains brief details of many disability organisations and others that may be useful to disabled people living in the Sunderland area. It also contains details of statutory and other services including City Hospitals, education, travel information, etc and gives brief information about disability equality. A hard copy is available free from our office at the Independent Living Centre, Claymere Road, Leechmere Industrial Estate, Sunderland. SR2 9TS Tel: 0191 5662154. Open Monday to Friday, 9 AM– 5 PM.
Help us as this site matures.
The Disability Alliance Sunderland (DAS) intends to make and keep this web site as a good example of a useful resource. We intend to maintain it so that when things become out-dated or no longer serve then we should keep on top of such alterations. However, we are not perfect....no its true, we're not. So if you notice a mistake, an error in our information etc., then please tell us. Our Contact Page offers several ways in which you can reach us. By helping us in that way this web site should always be a useful resource for the disabled citizens of Sunderland and as this site grows any errors should have less chance of growing along with it. Thank you. Chairperson: DAS.
